Course Description:
The Histology and Cytology course provides a comprehensive study of the microscopic structure and organization of human cells and tissues. The course emphasizes understanding the relationship between cellular and tissue architecture and their physiological functions. Students will explore the structure, function, and interactions of cellular organelles, the organization of primary tissue types, and the detailed histological features of major human organ systems.
The course integrates theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory skills, allowing students to examine prepared slides using light and electron microscopy, interpret cellular and tissue structures, and relate these findings to normal physiology and early pathological changes. By the end of the course, students will acquire the foundational knowledge necessary for advanced studies in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, and other clinical sciences.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the structure and function of the human cell, including organelles and specialized features.
- Identify and classify the four primary tissue types and their subtypes, understanding their roles in body function.
- Analyze the microscopic structure of major organ systems and correlate histological features with physiological function.
- Develop practical skills in slide interpretation, microscopy, and the recognition of normal versus abnormal tissue features.
- Establish a foundational understanding of histology to support future clinical and biomedical studies.
Course Format:
- Lectures: Theoretical understanding of cellular and tissue biology.
- Laboratory Practical Sessions: Hands-on examination of histological slides and application of microscopy techniques.
- Self-Study: Assignments, slide review, and reading to reinforce lecture and practical content.
Assessment Methods:
- Written exams including multiple-choice and descriptive questions
- Practical examinations identifying cell and tissue structures on prepared slides
- Continuous assessment through assignments and laboratory participation
